Faculty & Staff Collaborations to Accommodate StudentsWith so much of the focus of accommodations and services being curriculum based the DRC works very closely with the faculty to ensure that they can partner in the delivery of academic accommodations. Appropriate academic adjustments and modifications to the curriculum, or to a procedure governing a service are some of the ways the DRC can provide accommodations to students with disabilities. Adjustments may include providing students with a reader, notetaker, typist or scribe, suggesting alternative testing formats for a student who is blind or has a learning disability, or adapting a workstation for a student with a physical disability. For those requiring test accommodations, the DRC operates a fully accessible testing center located in INDS 239 for use exclusively by students registered with the DRC. Other services include personal and academic counseling, disability management, disabled parking for mobility impaired, consultation with faculty and staff to assist with classroom access, and priority registration on a case-by-case basis. The objective is to provide equal access to students with disabilities while maintaining academic integrity. Accommodations are provided on an individual basis to students and will not be provided if they fundamentally alter the nature of a program (see SJSU Presidential Directive 97-03). In order to promote retention and success for students, the DRC encourages dialogue between the student and faculty or staff member early each semester. Faculty are strongly encouraged to call a DRC counselor to explore these issues or learn more about specific accommodations of student that may be in one of their classes.
