CRITERIA FOR GENERAL EDUCATION MATH SUBSTITUTION AT SJSU:

 

1.                  SJSU matriculated student and enrolled for at least one semester.

2.                  Documentation submitted to the Disability Resource Center (DRC) verifies a learning disability/cognition function affecting math skills.

3.                  Student is in a major which will approve this petition (see List of Approved Majors for GE Math Substitution)

4.                  At least one college level math course has been attempted and appears on college transcript.

5.                  Successful completion of the (A3) Critical Thinking requirement (C or better grade).

6.                  Have an ELM score.

 

PROCEDURE FOR MATH SUBSTITUTION PETITION:

1.      Make an appointment with the DRC Advising Coordinator.

2.      A petition will be filled out verifying all above criteria and submitted to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

3.      At this appointment, bring in a copy of all transfer college transcripts and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for attachment to the petition request.

4.      The Undergraduate Studies Office will review and mail the student a copy of their decision.

5.      If the petition is approved, the student will need to successfully complete the approved substitution course and notify the DRC Advising Coordinator so notification can be submitted to the Mathematics Department to release any math holds on student’s record.

NOTE:  If you have been approved for a math waiver at another institution, it is not valid at SJSU.
