Deaf & Hard of Hearing ProgramThe Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program provides educational sign-language interpreting and educational real-time captioning services to students and employees of San Jose State University. Eighty percent of the sign-language interpreters employed with the DRC are RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certified and possess on an average approximately 10-15 years of interpreting experience in various settings. Candidates for employment as an Educational Sign-Language Interpreter at SJSU must have attended a recognized Interpreter Training Program and pass the SJSU Interpreter evaluation. Many of the educational captioners employed with the DRC are candidates for the CSR (California Shorthand Reporters) exam and minimally certified at 180 w.p.m. Candidates for employment as an Educational Captioner at SJSU must have attended a recognized Court Reporting Program and pass the SJSU captioner evaluation. StudentsTo obtain sign language interpreting services, real-time educational captioning services or note-taking services, Deaf & Hard of Hearing Students must meet with the DHoH Program Coordinator or Lead Interpreter initially and each semester thereafter to maintain services. Students who qualify for an ALD may also acquire equipment from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. A student who is newly arrived on campus must bring to the initial meeting an audiogram by a licensed audiologist or medical doctor verifying their hearing loss. At this meeting, students must sign a Statement of Agreement to confirm that they have read and understood DRC policies and procedures.
